Rent Back & Moving Handoff: Keep the Keys a Little Longer

Answer 5 questions to get a 5-category Rent Back playbook: terms, rent and deposit, timeline handoff, risks, and alternatives. Rent Back makes 'sell first, move later' workable — but only if it's in the contract, never a handshake.

Many sellers buy before they sell: the new close comes first and the old home still has no buyer. Rent Back lets you keep living in the home after closing — the buyer becomes your landlord. It lives near Section 9 of the RPA, and 'under 30 days' and '30 days or more' use different forms, with different terms, deposit, and insurance rules.

  • Rent Back must be in writing: dates, rent, deposit, responsibilities
  • Do at least two walk-throughs: before close and before you move out
  • Day counts and amounts are flagged 'needs-confirm' — verify before signing
